T-Mobile’s Project Emerald is the new Sidekick Twist With Android 2.1?
May 15th
Who wants a Sidekick with some kick? T-Mobile users have been hurting for a worthy successor to the aging G1 (and a new Android phone in general) and rumour has it that this phone, codenamed Project Emerald, will be that phone. HTC has been given the task of designing the phone, with the Sidekick handle, and will provide many of the same features previous sidekick owners are used to in a beefier package. TmoNews reports the Sidekick “Twist” will boast “Android 2.1, a 1 GHz Processor (Snapdragon?), with a front facing Camera, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, and 16 GB onboard storage“. These specs are similar to the also HTC-designed EVO 4G, with the major difference being the slide-out QWERTY keyboard that Sidekick users are used to.
The problem with this rumour is that the Sidekick is aimed at the lower-priced crowd, and as a result, the brand is synonymous with texting teens. Bringing the hardware to the high-end spectrum will do two things: dictate a much higher starting price point for the hardware (anywhere from $150-$200 on a two-year contract) and force the user to pay a premium for data, something Sidekick users traditionally aren’t used to spending.
This rumour has some legs, however, as HTC is known for bringing some decent hardware at a pretty good price to most consumers, but I don’t know if this will check out. It’s entirely possible this phone will have all those specs described without the Sidekick name attached to it.
