New Area Code Coming to South Western Ontario?
Apr 13th
Ontario’s population is growing faster than a man’s beard, but now we have proof that the numbers are just staggering. For the first time in Canadian history a third area code will need to be added to keep up with the alarming number of mobile users. The CRTC has issued the area code 365 for activation on March 25th, 2013, with the 289 and 905 area codes expected to run out by March of 2014.
With this being said I wonder when Toronto’s beloved 416/647 area codes will start to run out? 648 was meant to replace 416 for the mobile generation, but it seems like there is a lot of recycling taking place, and 416 numbers are still available. Guess we will have to wait and see.

Get Ready to Welcome Another Carrier to the Canadian Mix
Apr 9th

As if the Canadian market wasn’t aggressive enough since the famous Wireless Spectrum Auction of 2008. Get ready to welcome another carrier to the battle field by the end of 2011. Shaw Communications (who won 18 licences and spent $189 million during the auction) CEO, Jim Shaw was quoted saying:
“We are advancing our strategy to offer a competitive wireless offering and are now planning for an initial launch in late 2011. Accordingly, we are accelerating our Wireless capital spend and expect to invest approximately $100 million in fiscal 2010. The investment in this new business will primarily be funded by cash on hand.”
There isn’t much else to go on yet, but one can expect on launch, “Unlimited Plans,” “No Contracts” and catchy gimmicks (there is no other way to really be relevant) to win over some of the still-disgruntled Canadian market who have long abided the Big Three’s oligopoly.
Would you switch to Shaw? Do you even care anymore about all these new carriers coming into the mix? Leave a comment and let us know

Storm2 9550 Coming to Bell Mobility?
Mar 29th

Well Bell customers your time has come. Come April 13th, you can go ahead and give the old 9530 to the dog to destroy (If you haven’t already) because word has it Bell is planning on launching the Storm2 9550. This comes just days after quietly discontinuing the original Storm1 from their smart phone roster. The 9550 will be offered to CDMA customers and will be priced as following: $349.95 on 3-year contract, $399.95 on 2-year contract, $499.95 on 1-year contract, and $549.95 out right. This pricing is rather high for today’s standards so I’m fairly certain as the marketing rolls out the promotional pricing will decrease closer to or on date of launch.
So, my die hard Storm1 users who plans on lining up outside their nearest Bell store come launch?

Google Does a Little Teasing With The CDMA Nexus One
Mar 27th

So far the only Nexus One love going around has been to GSM users. T-Mobile US customers had first cracks at it, then more recently AT&T/Rogers was given their turn, followed by rumors of some Sprint love on the horizon. But the big question has always been when is the nation’s largest carrier getting it? (I’m talking Verizon Wireless or Big Red as it’s more commonly referred to) Well, supposedly Google did a little teasing today by accidentally posting it for sale at a subsidized price of only $199.00. This can only be a mean trick because Google is proudly the first phone maker to sell a phone through their own means of distribution and NOT through carriers at a subsidized price, essentially it’s full price or nothing. Anyways, the error was quickly fixed and Verizon users are still anxiously waiting for their turn. No official word has been given yet on an official release date for Verizon, but we will keep you posted if things change.

New wireless carrier Public Mobile not as “Unlimited” as they claim to be.
Mar 19th
The new carrier on the Canadian block, Public Mobile launched yesterday, touting a $40 a month “unlimited” talk and text plan. They only offer four phones, all of which are pretty standard that are designed mainly for messaging and calling purposes. Sorry folks, no Nexus One this time around.
WIND mobile has come out to try to inform users to just what this “unlimited” plan includes. WIND issued a press release to make sure customers understand the limits of Public Mobile’s plans. They point out the fact that Public Mobile’s plans only work in their coverage area proving that while the plans may be unlimited, the coverage is not. There is no roaming at all so if you aren’t Public Mobile’s limited coverage areas then you simply don’t have service. Public Mobile is currently able to reach 19 million people in Ontario and Quebec. While this sounds good, the map below shows that coverage is limited to the cities of Montréal and Toronto and it’s surrounding area.
Whether or not Public Mobile will be a serious competitor in Canada’s mobile market is still debatable and to some it seems that Public Mobile is just looking to get bought out by a larger provider. What do you think about Public Mobile? Will they compete with the larger wireless providers in Canada?

There’s a new kid in town…
Mar 1st
Well well well, what do we have here? What is this seemingly happy man offering? food? jewelery? maybe mens suits? hmm… I was just as baffled as you when I first saw it. Cleverly placed ads like this popped up all across Toronto’s bus shelters today leaving commuters asking: “what the?”
So I took it upon myself to do a little digging and found out that Mobile Syrup had discovered the same ads and were just as baffled, however, they got to the bottom of it. The ads are for none other than Public Mobile, the newest carrier to offer the now notorious $40 “Unlimited” voice and text plans. They will run on the G-Block CDMA platform (won in the great spectrum auction of 2008) so NO you cannot use an existing unlocked device with them. No word on the official launch date, but its being said they are taking a similar route to recently launched WIND Mobile and will be distributing through corporate and retail channels.
What do you think? Willing to try them out? Let us know!

I’ve got good news for all you Android fans on VZW – the guys and gals over at Engadget have evidence of the CDMA Nexus One in the FCC testing stages. Not too much to say about it yet, but I’m guessing the FCC is far less stringent than VZW’s approval process.
So, Droid-users, you upgrading?
