Third Dropbox Beta Released For BlackBerry
Aug 19th
I got an email in my inbox this morning telling me that Dropbox for BlackBerry beta had been updated to version 3.
So far the update has proven quite good, and stability has improved. I am running the app on a BlackBerry Torch 9800, and it seems to be pretty robust.
Improvements, according to the company are as follows:
- Support for all devices running 4.5 and above (audio and video supported in OS 4.6 and above only)
- Back-button from main screen hides app
- Fixes around opening files in external viewers (xls, etc)
- Support for open-edit-upload scenario for external viewers (e.g., docs2go)
If you have a spot in the closed beta, head to their mobile website, login to your linked account, and get updating!
LogMeIn Ignition Beta For Android, Free As In Beer (For Now)
May 6th
Want to test a very capable, useful and intuitive product, for free, on your Android device?
Course you do!
LogMeIn Ignition, the mobile version of the company’s very popular remote computer browser, is available for free on the Android Marketplace. This app for the iPhone and iPad goes for a cool $29.99, and it’s worth every penny. Having remote access to your Windows or Mac machine on the go is one of the coolest features out there for your phone, and this program uses the Users already installed on your system to gain access.
Merely install the app on your Android phone, download the app on your Windows/Mac machine, and go. You register your computer online, and when you log in on your phone it detects what computers are available to access. Once connected, you have the option of manipulating the screen with your finger like a mouse, or to access files and folders like you would on your desktop.
Obviously phones with a higher-resolution screen are going to benefit more from the experience, and because there is a lovely pinch-to-zoom feature available to phones running Android 2.0+, the UI is about as intuitive as it gets.
Don’t believe me, though: hit up the Android Marketplace and check it out yourself. More info is available on their website.
iPhone OS 4.0, Beta 3 Adds Some New Unannounced Features
May 5th
Looks like Apple is rolling along with the 4.0 betas, much like they did back in the 3.0 days. As a developer, I cannot disclose details but I can report on what others have. Engadget noticed that the application switcher tray thing has a software orientation lock and iPod controls. Gizmodo furthermore added that canceling applications can be done much quicker. The action used to be: tap and hold, wait for jiggle, tap the minus sign, repeat for every app. Now, there is only one tap and hold action, which speeds things up immensely. Orientation locks will help those that read in bed.
It’s really refreshing for Apple to be adding unannounced features. Maybe we iPhone users can get the notification problem solved or even get widgets and glanceable data on the lock screen. One can dream, right? Unfortunately, Apple has pulled the update for unknown reasons. If it was these features being released to the public, that damage has been done.
Update: Looks like the beta went completely official just now. Developers should have gotten emails about it. I wonder if these features have been removed, or if anything has been added.
RIM Launches BlackBerry Beta Zone
Mar 24th
Research In Motion today unveiled a new initiative for those out there who don’t mind being their guinea pigs. The BlackBerry Beta Zone is now open to residents in US, Canada as well as the UK. The offering itself is quite interesting to see come from RIM considering their past history of being very stand offish at the mere mention of the words “open beta”. This time around however, they are offering some cool incentives to those who sign up.
- BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.1 (Available April 1st)
- BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.2
- BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 Maintenance Releases for the 8520/8530 – (Open to members who live in Canada, will be capped at 1000 participants)
For those who do join the program, the requirements are rather to me. Fill out some surveys and offer up some feedback on what you tested. Kind of nice to see RIM inviting this sort of thing for the BlackBerry community. In all reality, if you have ever downloaded a leaked OS or leaked version of BlackBerry Messenger you’re already doing it. Just with this program, RIM will actually be able to track the feedback better and hopefully implement fixes for bugs faster than previously. You can sign up for BlackBerry Beta Zone here.
