Mobilicity at 100 days
Aug 26th

Lately Mobilicity has seen its share of consumer criticism, but like most start-ups going through growing pains they have persevered and lasted in this Canadian cut-throat market.
Today, Mobilicity issued a press release on its 100th day live to let the people know how they are doing and their future plans, here are some of the key points shared:
- 30% growth in retail distribution
- 40 new GTA locations opened
- 300 points of distribution
Mobilicity’s President and CEO Dave Dobbin had this to say:
“We’re continuing to enhance our distribution to provide the most convenient customer experience around, with our extensive and growing network of locations, Mobilicity customers can easily shop for phones, pay their bills and receive customer support near their homes or workplaces.”
Glad to see Mobilicity doing well and look forward to seeing more good news come from them!

Bell readying a BlackBerry 6 update for 2011?
Aug 26th
Good news for Bell users with HSPA BlackBerry’s who recently upgraded and are salivating over the pending Canadian launch of the Torch 9800.
A tipster sent MobileSyrup an internal screenshot of both when they expect to release the update and the devices expected to be supported. Although, if you have been following BlackBerry news lately you would have already known these devices would get the update sooner or later, its always been a question of when.
With this little “leak” I guess it’s just a matter of time before Rogers and Telus drop the same information.

Rogers releases the Nokia 6700 Slide
Aug 26th
Anyone who knows mobile in Canada knows that Rogers and Nokia have always had a good relationship, despite lack-luster sales.
Today, Rogers quietly launched another hand-set to the non-smartphone market with the Nokia 6700; a device packed with all the features you could ever need without the extra data cost. It comes loaded with Nokia’s S60 software and features the following specs:
- 2.2-inch display (resolution of 240 x 320)
- 2.5mm headset jack
- Holds up to 16GB with a microSD card
- Stereo FM radio
- 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera, auto-focus, LED flash and a front camera for video calling
Nokia devices have always been known for their reliability and sturdy build, so all this at a very reasonable $79.99 on a 3-year contract, or $229.99 off-contract isn a solid price point for the new gadget.

Texting World Record Broken with Samsung Galaxy S
Aug 23rd
These days, the topic of keyboards on mobile devices is a hot one. Some prefer the Cadillac ride of a BlackBerry keyboard, while others prefer the on screen touch goodness that is found in the iPhone 4.
One recently crowned world record holder though, prefers the keyboard found on the Samsung Galaxy S which makes use of SWYPE. 25.94 seconds is all the time it took Melissa Thompson of Salford, England, to capture the Guinness World Record for fastest typing on a mobile phone. After being invited by Samsung to compete for the record, Melissa’s winning sentence as determined by Guinness was the following:
“The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.”
Oddly enough Melissa claims, since moving in with her boyfriend, her texting speed capabilities have actually decreased since she no longer sends as many daily messages. In any event, the previous record holder held a time of 35.54 seconds for the exact same sentence. Looks like Mellisa’s texting skills are doing just fine. How fast can you type?

Aug 20th

Recently there has been rumors circulating the blogosphere that Mobilicity wasn’t doing well, and in fact had plans to close their doors.
Shortly thereafter my Twitter timeline exploded, followers looked to me for answers, asking me what was going on and some even dropping tips to our hotline mentioning “Mobilicity is preparing to announce bankruptcy.” Instead of posting on hearsay I reached out to my contact at Mobilicity for some answers and here is what she had to say:
Hi Corey,
Appreciate your call.
We wouldn’t put stock into slanderous rumours likely started by the competition. We have a more aggressive growth trajectory than any other new entrant and must be having a greater impact on their businesses than we first anticipated.
As you can see the rumors are just rumors.
Mobilicity is doing well and growing faster than they had ever expected, they already have a retail reach of over 300+ stores and that number is growing rapidly.
Thanks to all for the tips, I hope this post has cleared up any doubt in your minds.
Video: BlackBerry6 running on the Bold 9700
Aug 20th
Since OS6 was announced there has been argument as to which existing in-market devices would actually support it.
The first commercials showcased it on a touchscreen device (Storm series), then rumors poured down that non-touchscreen devices such as the Pearl 9100, Bold 9650, and Bold 9700 would be supported, but no one had seen actual proof of it.
Well, it’s Friday and what kind of Friday would it be without a nice video to feast our eyes on? BGR brings us BlackBerry 6 running on his 9700 for the world to see. He doesn’t go into specifics on the build, but he shows us all the drool worthy features once could ask for, all running smoothly with little to no lag.
Have a look at the video:

As you can see it runs smoothly with minimal lag and looks promising to those who don’t want to give up their precious 9700′s.

HTC Legend Being Discontinued?
Aug 20th

Some of the best Android devices get the shortest life span, and it seems as though the very popular HTC Legend is seeing its final days as well.
According to the above inventory screenshot, due to supply constraints, the HTC Legend is being discontinued from Bell’s lineup of Android phones less than 3 months after being launched as a Bell/Virgin exclusive. The device hasn’t even received its update to Android 2.2!
A lot is left up in the air with this one causing some to question its validity, but factually speaking since the introduction of AMOLED screens to the mainstream, the components have become incredibly scarce, meaning Bell may be looking for a quick exit strategy to put focus solely on the recently released Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant.
Unfortunatley, the Legend, like its predecessor the Hero, fit a certain small-handed niche in North America. Because Bell (and Telus before them) were the only carriers in North America to release the device, they became an importer’s dream down south, where neither of the phones were offered officially by a carrier.
Either way, the HTC Legend had a great run in Canada, you can read our review on it here or say R.I.P. and let is go to Android heaven with the recently demised Nexus One.
