Home of the Vancouver Canucks now ‘Rogers Arena’
Jul 6th
Today, Canucks Sports & Entertainment and Rogers Communications Inc announced a major, ten-year strategic alliance giving Rogers the Arena naming and telecommunications sponsorship rights. Beyond Rogers branding, the telecommunications sponsorship includes, in-game features, interactive hockey themed concourse displays, mobile applications and more.
Here at Rogers, we’re passionate about sports – whether it’s tennis (Rogers Cup), baseball (Toronto Blue Jays) or broadcasting (Rogers Sportsnet), just to name a few.
We’ve got some exciting news to share with Vancouver sports and live entertainment fans. Effective today, the home of the Vancouver Canucks will become known as Rogers Arena. This ten-year strategic alliance also makes Rogers the official telecommunications sponsor of the Canucks.
What does this mean for Vancouver?
British Columbia is one of our most important markets, and this investment is just the beginning. We plan to work with the Canucks to explore innovative ways to engage fans anytime, any place. We’ll also join forces with the Canucks on local charitable initiatives.
Looking forward to seeing you at Rogers Arena when the puck drops this fall!
The official unveiling of the external and internal signage will happen at the downtown Arena prior to the start of the 2010-11 NHL season; the Canucks’ 40th anniversary playing in the NHL. Rogers takes over the Arena naming rights from General Motors of Canada Limited (General Motors) which had been the naming rights partner since the Arena opened in 1995.

BlackBerry Tip: How to dial letters with your BlackBerry
Jul 5th
I make many business calls from my BlackBerry and I constantly find myself using ‘Dial by name directories’. Once in a while I also run into a situation where I would like to type a phone number that consists of letters. This is all easily doable on a BlackBerry but there are many people who are unaware of that feature.
When using the BlackBerry dialer, simply hold down the alt key to enter letters.
Now if your call is already in progress and you need to input letters, you can either hold down the alt key,
OR
Press alt & the right Shift key, which will lock the keypad into typing letters. When you are finished entering letters, press the Shift key again to revert back to number form.
P.S. Yes I left off the last ‘S’ for savings
BlackBerry WebKit Browser Leaks Blocked By Service Providers
Jul 5th

There have been several leaked videos of unreleased BlackBerry devices sporting the BlackBerry 6 OS, but none of them have showed off the WebKit browser. This is because the WebKit browser is completely controlled by service books which carriers are not currently pushing out. There have also been some BlackBerry 6 hybrids floating around lately, but it really doesn’t matter how many hybrids or OS leaks there are, we won’t have the WebKit browser until service books are readily available. I know a lot of us were hoping for a July leak with the WebKit browser, but is seems like the wait will be longer than we originally expected.

Facebook Chat Coming To Official BlackBerry App
Jul 2nd

Facebook has recently added a chat option for the BlackBerry app on their end. The Facebook for BlackBerry app doesn’t support chat as of yet, but it is a sign of things to come in the future.
Facebook for BlackBerry v1.8 which has been pushed out to select Beta Zone members, is reportedly much faster than v1.7, but currently does not have the chat option either. The chance that chat will be added to v1.8 before it comes out of beta is slim to none. The chat option will most likely be available in v2.0 which will most likely come with BlackBerry 6 in the fall.
Hopefully users will have the option to turn chat on and off because it could become quite a nuisance otherwise. If you can’t wait until the BlackBerry app supports Facebook Chat, you can download a third-party IM client such as beejive, Nimbuzz, or IM+ to get your fix for the meantime. Personally, I do not use Facebook Chat, so I haven’t tested it on any of those clients.

Details spilled on Android 3.0 “Gingerbread”
Jun 30th

In a recent Russian Podcast, Eldar Murtazin let a few details slip out about Gingerbread, Android’s upcoming 3.0 OS. Gingerbread is said to sport a revamped UI similar to that of the 3D Gallery app, which was introduced with Eclair. With the new OS, a custom interface (ie: HTC’s Sense or Motorola’s Motoblur) may not be possible, though nothing is confirmed at the moment.
Custom interfaces have been embraced with many users, but it seems at though some have affected the performance of certain devices, which is out of Google’s hands. Google is revamping the UI in an attempt to appease users, while maintaining more control over the OS (a la Apple). Hopefully, Gingerbread will liven up the user experience so that custom interfaces will no longer be desired.
Gingerbread will only be available for devices sporting a 1GHz CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a 3.5″ display or larger. There are a decent amount current devices that will make the cut, but some will be forced to stick with 2.1 or 2.2. There will also be a 1280 x 760 resolution available for devices with screens that are 4″ or larger. Right now it looks like we’ll see some new devices released with Gingerbread in mid-October, along with the upgrade to current devices.
