Is another Canadian carrier on its way?

One of our connects sent us a rather interesting tip this morning. Rumor has it that Rogers Wireless is planning on launching another discount carrier (yes they own and operate Fido as well) with hopes that within 5 years its competition (the other Canadian discount brands ie WIND Mobile and Mobilicity) will not survive. It is very interesting watching stories unravel, I vividly remember Rogers Communications President Rob Bruce saying during his keynote speech at the Canadian Telecom Summit not too long ago that Rogers isn’t worried about the emerging brands, that “Unlimited” is just a catchy marketing term, and that consumers should stop “strengthening the weak” when it comes to discount brands. My guess is he’s either had a change of heart towards the business model that the discount brands have gained success on or he realizes that the only way to win is to simply drown out the enemy.
Further to this story, BGR posted inventory screenshots displaying the Samsung Gravity as one of the devices Chat-r intends to carry, also included in this lineup are:
Nokia 1661
Nokia 2680 slide
LG Sapphire
We’ve also been told that Chat-r’s very quiet launch party will be held July 5th in Toronto and July 6th in Vancouver. Rogers’ is rumored to be launching Chat-r (In a similar fashion to WIND) in Toronto first, with Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Ottawa following suit shortly after.
We will update on this post as the story unfolds, hit the break for the inventory screenshot

Anyone who knows mobile in Canada knows that Rogers and Nokia have always had a good relationship, despite lack-luster sales. Today, Rogers quietly launched another hand-set to the non-smartphone market with the Nokia 6700; a device packed with all the features you could ever need without the extra data cost. It comes loaded with Nokia’s

Does Rogers need another low-end, old-software Android device? Like I need a hole in the head. Which isn’t very much (though, reading press releases sometimes…). Perhaps what they need to do is take the devices they already sell, like the Samsung Galaxy Spica, HTC Magic+, Motorola QUENCH et al, and UPGRADE THEM INSTEAD. Uhem. On a

These days, the topic of keyboards on mobile devices is a hot one. Some prefer the Cadillac ride of a BlackBerry keyboard, while others prefer the on screen touch goodness that is found in the iPhone 4. One recently crowned world record holder though, prefers the keyboard found on the Samsung Galaxy S which makes

RIM did not slow down this weeek, as they released Facebook for BlackBerry v1.8 and App World 2.0 to the public. Isn’t it great when you load apps/updates that give you a sense of renewed appreciation for your device? I sure

In fact, you can unlock the device yourself. All you need is root access, a tiny .exe file, and a little Command Prompt knowledge. See, the unlock code is in
Rogers Launches The LG Neon2

The LG Neon, though not the most successful phone to launch on Rogers (or Fido for that matter) was always the go-to phone for consumers looking for a discounted full QWERTY/Touchscreen device. Just over a year since its launch comes the second generation of the device: The Neon2, refreshed with a few minor changes from
